India will struggle against Akhtar in absence of Sachin, Yuvraj in Asia Cup: Tanvir

Islamabad, Jun.12 (ANI): With no Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh in the batting line up, India is going to struggle against the pace of comeback man Shoaib Akhtar in the upcoming Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, believes Pakistan left arm pacer Sohail Tanvir.
"India will be without Sachin and Yuvraj while most of the others are recuperating from the losses against Zimbabwe. In such a scenario, it would not be easy dealing with Akhtar's pace and variety," The Daily Times quoted Tanvir, as telling a sports website.
While Tendulkar had opted out of the tournament to spend time with his family, Yuvraj was axed from the team following a string of poor performances in the recent past.
Describing Akhtar as a 'fighter', Tanvir played down past controversies surrounding the Rawalpindi Express, and said he expects the fast bowler to be a changed man.
"Look, whatever has happened in the past is history. I am sure you will get to see a different Akhtar in the Asia Cup. No matter how big a star any player is, comebacks are the same for all. Akhtar is a fighter," he said.(ANI)

India finally beat Zimbabwe, win 1st T20 by six wickets

Harare, June 12: India overcame a shaky start to register their first win over Zimbabwe on the current tour as they beat the hosts by six wickets in the first Twenty20 International cricket match here today. Chasing a modest 112 to win, India overhauled the target with five overs to spare with Yusuf Pathan (36) and Virat Kohli (27) finishing off the game for the visitors, who were shocked by the African minnows twice in the one-day tri-series.
Earlier, shaking off the tri-series rust, Indian bowlers showed discipline and restricted Zimbabwe to a meagre 111 for nine at Harare Sports Club here today. Paceman R Vinay Kumar (3/24) was the most successful bowler with three wickets while Ashok Dinda (2/27) and Pragyan Ojha (2/11) accounted for two victims apiece.
During India's chase, big-hitting Pathan and youngster Kohli shared an unbeaten 64-run stand for the fifth wicket to rescue India from a precarious 48 for 4. Pathan's 23-ball knock contained two fours and three sixes while Kohli faced 22 balls with three fours and a six.
India, like their opponents, began poorly as they lost openers - Murali Vijay (5) and Naman Ojha (2) to paceman Chris Mpofu by the third over. Skipper Suresh Raina (28) played a good hand in the middle order to re-build the innings with Rohit Sharma (10).
However, both of them returned to the dug out in the eighth over with spinner Ray Price (2/24) getting rid of them in the eighth over. It became jittery for India but Pathan and Kohli ensured that their side do not end up facing more humiliation.
Earlier, Chamu Chibhabha (40) and Craig Ervine (30) stood tall amid ruins for the hosts, as their middle and lower order collapsed after a sound start. Opting to field, Vinay Kumar gave India a perfect start and landed the first blow to the hosts as early as in the fourth ball of the match when he got rid of Hamilton Masakadza (1), caught by skipper Suresh Raina at extra cover.
Vinay was hit for a four and two sixes in his next over by Chibhabha and Brendan Taylor (15) but the paceman got his revenge when he caught the latter plumb in front of the wicket in the last ball of the same over.

Team India eyes revenge vs Zim

After the humiliation they suffered in the ODI tri-series, India will look to make amends and take revenge against giant-slayers Zimbabwe in the first Twenty20 International here tomorrow.
Here with a second-string team, India were dumped out of the just-concluded tri-series after suffering back-to-back defeats against the spirited Zimbabweans.
The host team, which lost the tri-series final to Sri Lanka, would be plotting another shocker for the Indians tomorrow.
The break that followed their tri-series ouster has given Suresh Raina's men enough time to chalk out their plans to avoid another stunner from Elton Chigumbura's fighting side.
The key to India's success is batting and the line-up is desperately missing the heavyweights, who were rested from the series.
Dinesh Karthik and M Vijay are not exactly the ideal opening pair for Twenty20s as both the batsmen are known to take their time in settling down at the crease before attempting strokes.
In fact, the duo couldn't make much of an impact in the ODI series failing to score any memorable knock.
Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Raina himself are the men in form and would look to continue their run in the two Twenty20s.
A lot would be expected from Twenty20 specialist Yusuf Pathan, who would be aiming to prove his worth after being dropped from the ODI squad for the upcoming Asia Cup owing to poor run of form.
On the bowling front, the Indian spin attack would be bolstered by the arrival of Piyush Chawla as Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha have not made a mark so far on the tour.
The pace department is not too impressive either with the Ashok Dindas and Umesh Yadavs conceding too many runs for too few wickets.
Zimbabwe, on the other hand, are high on morale despite the tri-series final loss to Sri Lanka. The team has shown the stomach for a fight and they would be looking to continue just that.
Their batsmen showed decent form in the ODIs and would be looking to be slightly more aggressive in the shortest format of the game.
Hamilton Masakadza, Tatenda Taibu and Charles Coventry are proven performers and the Zimbabweans would be hoping to get some explosive knocks from them to surprise the Indians once again.

Will not tolerate indiscipline, Afridi warns teammates

Karachi: Heading a highly fractious bunch with a poor track record, Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi on Thursday issued a stern warning to his teammates, saying he would not brook any indiscipline.
Addressing a press conference in Lahore, the Pakistan captain said he would not tolerate any unruly behaviour and that he has conveyed it to Shoaib Akhtar and Shoaib Malik as well as the duo made a comeback to the team after a break.
"In the training camp I spoke to Shoaib and also Malik and explained to them the new set of rules that we expected them to follow in the team. I explained to them that being senior players I required their support to introduce a new culture in the team," Afridi said.
"The board has also made it clear that the captain and manager have full authority to take action against any player they feel is getting out of line," he said.
Pakistan cricket has been hit by several controversies since the start of the year when the team was touring Australia where it suffered a whitewash.
In the aftermath of the turbulent tour, PCB appointed an inquiry committee to probe into the reasons for the defeats and it later banned four players including former captains, Younus Khan, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Yousuf and fined three others including Afridi, Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal.
The arbitrator appointed by the board in recent weeks lifted the bans on Malik and Younis and also halved fines on other players.
Leaked video recordings of the inquiry committee proceedings confirmed groupings in the team and a revolt against former captain Younus Khan.
Afridi said Pakistan cricket needed to move in a new direction and for this he needed the complete support of all players.
"We have enormous talent and we have some exciting new players coming up. I am confident that if we play as a unit we can beat any time in the world," he said.

Ganguly and Lara to star for MCC against Pakistan

London: Sourav Ganguly will captain Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in a side featuring cricket great Brian Lara when they face the touring Pakistanis in a Twenty20 fixture at Lord's on June 27.
The match will be the first time that MCC, which owns Lord's, has played a Twenty20 fixture. It will also be the first time Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has played at Lord's since his man-of-the-match winning display in last year's World Twenty20 final win against Sri Lanka.
Lara, the former West Indies captain and one of cricket's greatest batsmen, will be playing for MCC for the first time. Former India captain Ganguly, also a left-handed batsman, is currently skippering the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
Among those also confirmed to play for MCC are Sri Lanka left-arm pace bowler Chaminda Vaas and Australian one-day specialist Ian Harvey. "MCC is delighted to welcome to Lord's a Pakistani side who have a proven track record in Twenty20 cricket," said John Stephenson, MCC's head of cricket and himself a former England batsman, in a statement.
"Shahid Afridi's men will face an exciting MCC team comprising world class performers and up-and-coming talent. Brian Lara is one of the finest batsmen to have ever played the game and Sourav Ganguly is a world-leading Twenty20 cricketer," added Stephenson, who helped select MCC's team.
"The match will provide spectators with a fantastic opportunity to see wonderful cricket and great cricketers."
The Twenty20 match forms part of the sponsorship agreement between MCC and the Pakistan Cricket Board which will see Pakistan play Australia in the MCC Spirit of Cricket Test and Twenty20 Series in England throughout July, with both Twenty20 matches at Birmingham's Edgbaston ground.
The two Tests between Pakistan and Australia, at Lord's and Headingley will be the first 'neutral' Tests to be played in England in nearly a century since the 1912 triangular tournament featuring England, Australia and South Africa.
Pakistan will also play four Tests and five One-Day Internationals against England starting in July. England face Australia in five One-Day Internationals, with the first at Hampshire's Rose Bowl ground on June 22.

Sri Lanka overwhelm Zimbabwe in series final

Harare: A dominant Sri Lanka came to within a freak run-out of whitewashing Zimbabwe in the final of the tri-nations tournament at Harare Sports Club on Wednesday.
The Sri Lankans scored a leisurely 203-1 in 34.4 overs to win with ease in reply to Zimbabwe's effort of 199 all out in 49 overs. The run-out stood between Sri Lanka bowling out the entire Zimbabwe team and then overtaking their target score without the loss of a single wicket.
Although Zimbabwe's Brendan Taylor was named man of the series afterwards it was Tillikeratne Dilshan who stole the day. He was named man of the match after amassing 108 not out, both for his score and for his captaincy, with his 100 coming up in 97 balls and including 13 boundaries.
It was Dilshan's seventh one-day international century and his first against Zimbabwe. "I was really elated, both for the 100 and for our series victory to take home after a hard time abroad," he said.
"We brought several youngsters with us for experience and they certainly benefitted. It was all well worthwhile."
The run-out came with the score on 160 - Sri Lanka's highest opening partnership against Zimbabwe in internationals. Dilshan went for a quick single to Graeme Cremer at point, but when his wicket was about to be broken he kept going and fellow opener Upul Tharanga moved forward from the other end to sacrifice his wicket.
Tharanga produced another of his speciality supporting roles with 72 runs. The match was killed as a potential spectacle after just a few overs of the Zimbabwe innings.
The home team prodded their way to 15-1 in seven overs and to 40-2 in 15. By comparison, Sri Lanka were 46-0 in seven and 88-0 in 15. Tatenda Taibu was initially a culprit with only four runs from his first 22 balls faced, but he redeemed himself by becoming easily Zimbabwe's top scorer with 71.
Their meagre 199 runs was soon overwhelmed by Dilshan and Tharanga, who gobbled up the Zimbabwe bowling with ease, if not quite disdain. Wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor said at the presentations: "We actually worked very hard just to get here. Everybody did well in the series and we expect to move forward step by step from here."
Home team captain Elton Chigumbura said: "We were put under pressure right from the start and just couldn't get going early on. But we take a lot of pluses from the last two weeks."
India, the other team in the Tri-nation series, will play Zimbabwe in two Twenty20 matches this weekend and on Thursday a game has been arranged for them against Zimbabwe A.

Yuvraj will be back soon, predicts Sehwag

New Delhi: India vice-captain Virender Sehwag on Wednesday threw his weight behind out-of-form Yuvraj Singh, calling him a "jewel" and predicting that the left-hander would soon be back in the Indian side after sorting out his fitness issues.
"He has been a jewel for India and I'm a great fan of him," Sehwag said.
"Times like this comes because of (lack of) form but I'm sure he would sort out his fitness and batting skills and will make a comeback soon," said the opener. "All he needs is to spend time on his own and think about his game," advised Sehwag.
Yuvraj did not find a place in India's Asia Cup squad because of lack of form and poor fitness. He had a forgettable outing in Indian Premier League III and he looked out of sorts in the Twenty20 World Cup as well.
Sehwag too had some injury issues of late but the star batsman said he is fully ready for this month's Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. "My shoulder has healed. I worked on my shoulders in the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and I'm fully fit now," Sehwag said.
Asked for his view on the young Indian players' technical frailties against short-pitch bowled, Sehwag said they would grow better with experience.
"People said the same thing about me. Give them some time and they would get better as they get experienced. Once they play more than 100 ODIs, they would do well. (Suresh) Raina, Rohit (Sharma), Gautam (Gambhir) they would be ready by the time you have World Cup," Sehwag said.
His views were sought on BCCI's decision not to send cricket teams to the Asian Games in China where cricket is making debut in Twenty20 format and the batsman said he could not do anything about it. "It is not in my hand, this is for the BCCI to decide. But wherever they send us, we would go and play," said Sehwag.

ICC Cricket World Cup tickets now on sale

NATASHA CHERRIATH: EMIRATES HIGH-FLYER

Natasha Cherriath, 14, was 12 years old when she was appointed UAE captain in the 2007 ACC Women's Tournament in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. She was more of a bowler then, distinguished by her grace under pressure and accurate medium-pace. Those qualities were still on display in the recently concluded ACC U-19 Women's Championship and to them were added a thumping off-drive and terrific batting technique. She finished Batter of the Tournament with 121 runs at 30.25. She is on her way to being one of the best cricketers in Asia.

Natasha Cherriath spoke to us in Chiang Mai and, following the conclusion of the U-19 tournament, online from her home in Dubai.

"Although some of my friends dislike the game, I still think it's amazing."
When did you start playing cricket?
"I started playing in August 2003 in the Sharjah Cricket Academy. I was coached at the time by Shehzad Altaf, a UAE national cricketer who played in the 1996 World Cup. I was one girl amongst all the boys playing cricket." What do you love about the game?
"I just love the game itself. Although some of my friends dislike the game, I still think it's amazing. Probably the reason why they can't sit through a game is because it takes an entire day to finish but now with Twenty20, they're starting to get the hang of it."
There is so much that cricket can teach you in life. It teaches us about hard work, to learn from our mistakes and respect for the opposition. Going through life we're bound to hit lows and the important thing is to just keep working hard at whatever we're doing and we'll definitely get better at it.
What's been different about this ACC U-19 tournament compared to the senior teams' one last year in Malaysia?
"We are a young and energetic bunch and there is a great sense of team spirit. Not that things were much different in Malaysia - but for the senior tournament there were vast age gaps but still the players respected me as a captain and I really needed that support from them. It is really what matters most to me."

Flower backs Strauss as England's ODI skipper

London, Jun 8 (ANI): England coach Andy Flower has backed Test skipper Andrew Strauss to lead the side in ODIs, trying to put aside speculation over his replacement as one-day captain when the 15-man squad is announced on Thursday.
"Andrew Strauss will be captaining in the one-dayers. He is a fine leader and a fine batsman and has done some really good things for us in one-day cricket," Flower said, as England plays Australia and Bangladesh in the ODIs.
Flower said that Strauss is a specialist in facing fast bowling and bats aggressively up front, The Telegraph reports.
"He has been the architect of the attacking type of cricket England's one-day side has been playing recently. Over the past 12 months, he has played some very good limited-overs cricket and, in a way, he was the catalyst for the attacking cricket we have been able to play in Twenty20."
"If we think it's right to go elsewhere then we will do that... We will think long and hard about it but at this moment in time Andrew Strauss is the captain of the 50-over side," Flower said.
Strauss took rest during the winter in order to keep him fresh for the Ashes, but its success cannot be judged until that series is under way in late November. (ANI)

Sehwag continues to be number one Test batsman

Flamboyant Virender Sehwag maintained his number one position in the ICC rankings for Test batsmen and India also held on to its top spot in the latest chart.
Sehwag is leading the list with 863 points and is followed by South Africa's Hashim Amla (842) and Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene (836).
Left-handed opener Gautam Gambhir (824) and batting great Sachin Tendulkar (805) are the other two Indian batsmen in top-10 at number six and seven positions respectively.
VVS Laxman (14) and Rahul Dravid (16) also had their rankings unchanged.
In the bowlers list, India have two players in the top-10 with paceman Zaheer Khan placed at number six followed by spinner Harbhajan Singh.
In the teams' list, India are at the top with 124 points followed by South Africa (120) and Australia (119).

Tiwary leaps into big league in quick time

Mumbai, June 8 -- Monday will surely be an unforgettable day for Saurabh Tiwary. Not because he took the field at Headingley to replace injured Sudeep Tyagi during India-A's tour opener against Yorkshire, but because of his maiden call-up in the India team.
Tiwary, the Jharkhand southpaw, didn't have much to do except watch his India-A teammates pile on the runs against Yorkshire on the first two days of the 3-day tie. But it all changed on Monday.
To begin with, he had to replace injured Tyagi on the field at the start of the day. A little later, he saw Tyagi shouting to congratulate him for his selection in India's squad for the Asia Cup, to be played in Sri Lanka from June 15.
"It is a morale-booster for the whole team," India-A coach Pravin Amre told Hindustan Times on Monday. "Everyone is very happy for Saurabh. He really deserves it."
Ever since returning from Malaysia as member of India's triumphant Under-19 World Cup squad in 2008, Tiwary has been consistently improving as a batsman. Known for his power-hitter just like his idol Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the 20-year-old showed in the third edition of the Indian Premier League that he had indeed learnt the art of building an innings at a young age.
Hailing from Dhoni's state and sporting a similar hairdo that the India skipper had when he broke into the Indian team, Tiwary had to do something special to emerge from Dhoni's shadow. Riding on the back of a fruitful domestic season, Tiwary excelled for Mumbai Indians in IPL-III, emerging as the highest uncapped run-getter in the tournament.

Buzz Up Zimbabwe eye final upset, Lanka seek revenge

Giant-killer Zimbabwe will hope to cap their fairytale campaign with yet another stunning display while revenge will be high on Sri Lanka's agenda in the final of the cricket tri-series here on Wednesday.
Even though both India and Sri Lanka sent second-string squads for the low-profile tournament, few expected Zimbabwe to emerge as the table-topper with 13 points in their kitty.
The minnows twice beat India and both were comprehensive victories. As if to prove it was no fluke, they thumped Sri Lanka in Monday's dead rubber as well to finish their league campaign with three victories from four outings.
Key to their fortune has been Brendan Taylor's sensational form that has already earned the opener three Man of the Match awards.
In Taylor, Zimbabwe have got a batsman who have the skill and the temperament to see them through.
Hamilton Masakadza, Chamu Chibhabha, Tatenda Taibu and Charles Coventry are no dud with the bat either and they would put their best foot forward tomorrow to lift the title they have come so close to.
There bowling has been a revelation as well, especially their battery of spin bowlers. The likes of Ray Price, Prosper Utseya and Graeme Cremer have not only been accurate but also aggressive and the spirited support they got from the fielders made them all the more lethal.
In Monday's match, Sri Lanka threatened to run away with the game when Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga added 122 runs in 20-odd overs. Utseya's double strike then unhinged the Lankans and the Zimbabwean eventually bowled them out for 236 inside 48 overs.
Sri Lanka, however, would do everything tomorrow to prevent a repeat.
Skipper Dilshan will particularly expect Dinesh Chandimal, who scored his maiden ODI century against India the other day, to come good tomorrow and underline his talent with another significant knock.
In the bowling department, onus would be on Thilan Thushara and Dilhara Fernando to provide the early breakthrough and remove Taylor at the earliest.
Teams (From):

Sri Lanka: Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), Angelo Mathews, Upul Tharanga, Thilan Samaraweera, Dinesh Chandimal, Lahiru Thirimanne, Chamara Kapugedera, Suraj Randiv, Nuwan Kulasekara, Thilan Thushara, Ajantha Mendis, Jeevan Mendis, Dilhara Fernando, Chamara Silva, Thissira Perera.

Zimbabwe: Elton Chigumbura (capt), Andy Blignaut, Chamu Chibhabha, Charles Coventry, Graeme Cremer, Craig Ervine, Greg Lamb, Hamilton Masakadza, Chris Mpofu, Ray Price, Ed Rainsford, Vusi Sibanda, Tatenda Taibu, Brendan Taylor, Prosper Utseya.

Dhoni lose No 1 position to Hussey in ODI batsmen ranking

Dubai: Rested for the tri-nation cricket series in Zimbabwe, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni lost his numero uno status to Australia's Michael Hussey in the latest ICC rankings for ODI batsmen. Dhoni along with several others were rest by the Indian cricket board for the ongoing triangular series in Zimbabwe, where Suresh Raina is leading the side.
A player loses half a per cent of his ratings points for every match he misses and, as such, Dhoni has already lost 12 ratings points. The dashing wicket-keeper had regained the top spot from Hussey in February after the Australian scored 23 against New Zealand in the fourth ODI and didn't play in the fifth.
South African AB de Villiers is just two ratings points behind Dhoni at the third position. India's Sachin Tendulkar shares the fourth position with South African opener Hashim Amla who produced a stellar performances with the bat in the just concluded five-ODI series against the West Indies.
Amla, who had started the series in 25th position, has climbed 21 places after scores of 102, 92, 34, 129 and 45 and has same 751 points. The 27-year-old from Durban will now be chasing India opener Virender Sehwag's number-one position in the ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen when the three-Test series starts in Port-of-Spain from June 10.
Amla is in second place and trails Sehwag by 21 ratings points. A good performance in Port of Spain could potentially put him ahead of the Indian to give South Africa top positions in the batting, bowling and all-rounders' table.
Other Indians in the ODI list include Virender Sehwag who lost two points to be at 13th position, Yuvraj Singh (15th), Virat Kohli (16th) and Suresh Raina (18th). In ODI bowlers rankings, India's Harbhajan Singh has slipped three places to the ninth position.
No other Indian featured in the Top-20 list, headed by New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori with 761 points. In the ICC ODI Championship, South Africa has joined India on 119 ratings points but was ranked third when the ratings were calculated beyond the decimal point.
However, if India loses today to Sri Lanka in Harare, they will drop behind South Africa in third position on 118 ratings points. In contrast, India's victory over Sri Lanka will put them on 120 ratings points one ahead of South Africa.

Pakistan's Younus Khan has ban overturned on appeal

KARACHI (Reuters) - Former Pakistan captain Younus Khan is free to return to international cricket after the indefinite ban he received for ill-discipline during the side's tour of Australia was overturned by an appeals judge on Saturday.
Retired judge Irfan Qadir, who was nominated by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to reside over the appeals of all but one of seven players the body either banned or fined in March, said there were no grounds for the penalty on the batsman.
"The PCB gave an open-handed judgement while banning Younus. He was not given a chance to defend himself," Qadir told the media after the hearing in Lahore.
The shambolic Australia tour, where Pakistan lost every match, led the PCB to slap bans on Younus, fellow former captains Muhammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik and paceman Rana Naved following a probe into reports of disunity among the touring party.
Although Younus was overlooked for the Asia Cup one-day international tournament in Sri Lanka later this month because his ban was still in place when the squad was announced on Thursday, the player expressed his delight at the decision.
"I don't mind not being selected in the Asia Cup as it was more important for me to have this blot removed from my name," Younus told Pakistan's Neo Super Channel from England where he is playing county cricket for Surrey.
"I have always given 100 percent for my country and I am available whenever the selectors want me back," he added.
"It is a big victory for us as my client didn't back down from his argument that there was no justification for the ban on him," Younus's lawyer Ahmed Qayyum told Reuters.

YOUSUF RETIRES
As well as the four bannings, the inquiry committee also recommended fines for Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal for indiscipline and misconduct on the tour.
Yousuf, who led Pakistan in the Australia tour that ended in February, responded by announcing his retirement but the remaining six players appealed against the penalties, and last week Qadir overturned Malik's ban.
The retired judge also revoked Afridi's three million rupee ($35,269) fine and halved those of the Akmal brothers.
PCB lawyer Talib Rizvi confirmed that Qadir made it clear that if the board felt there were grounds for disciplinary action against Younus, it should send him a proper show cause order beforehand.
"The players have been relieved of the penalties in the national interest and after they assured the board they would adhere to disciplinary procedures in future," Rizvi told reporters.
Naved remains the only player pending the result of a claim against his ban and fine although Rizvi said Yousuf could also have his penalties waived if he lodged an appeal.

India crash out of tri-series after loss against Lanka

Harare: A sloppy India crashed out of the cricket tri-series after Sri Lanka, riding on Dinesh Chandimal's maiden century, thumped them by six wickets in a crucial One-dayer on Saturday.
Tottering on the brink of disaster after their back-to-back defeat against Zimbabwe, India badly needed to win this match with a big margin to keep alive their final hopes but they could not pull off a repeat performance of their previous encounter with the Lankans and went down with 1.4 overs to spare.
Chandimal's (111) 118-ball knock, which included six fours and five sixes, knocked the stuffing out of India's feeble bowling attack as Sri Lanka cruised to 270 for four in 48.2 overs. Monday's Sri Lanka-Zimbabawe match is now rendered inconsequential and they would meet again in Wednesday's final at the same venue.
Put into bat, India had posted 268 for nine with Virat Kohli (68), Yusuf Pathan (44) and R Ashwin (38) scoring bulk of the runs. Desperate for a win, India effected three changes in the squad - bringing in the uncapped trio of Naman Ojha, Pankaj Singh and R Ashwin while leaving out Murali Vijay, Umesh Yadav and Amit Mishra - but the win remained elusive.
Sri Lanka's chase got off to a brisk start with Tillakaratne Dilshan (21) looking in his element before he fell to Ashok Dinda in the sixth over. Chandimal joined Upul Tharanga (27) in the middle and looked quite at ease against the Indian attack.
Even after Tharanga fell to R Ashwin, Chandimal continued the good work in company of Chamara Kapugedera (42). He used his feet well against the spinners and never allowed the Indian bowlers to dictate terms.
Chandimal smote Pankaj Singh over mid-on, greeted Pragyan Ojha with a six and twice hit Ashwin out of the ground. Ashwin eventually had Chandimal stumped in the 41st over but by then, the writing was clear on the wall for India.
Jeevan Mendis (35) and Thilan Samaraweera (28) completed for the formality for the Sri Lankans with consummate ease.
Earlier, Virat Kohli's sedate half-century guided India to a competitive 268 for nine against Sri Lanka in a must-win match. Kohli curbed his aggressive instinct to score a 95-ball 68 on the low and slow Harare Sports Club wicket and shared a crucial 84-run third-wicket stand with Yusuf Pathan (44) to take India beyond the 250 mark.
Kohli's innings was a struggle from the word go as he found boundaries hard to come by and dealt mostly in singles and twos. But he did not give up and displayed immense patience during his 95-ball stay, evident from the fact that he found the fence only five times in the entire innings.
Yusuf, on the other hand, provided the acceleration from the other end with a brisk 41-ball innings during which he struck six fours and a huge six. However, the Indian openers continued their poor run as Dinesh Karthik (27) and debutant Naman Ojha (1) failed to give the team a good start.
In-form Rohit Sharma (32 off 40), captain Suresh Raina (19) and Ravindra Jadeja (19) all got starts but failed to capitalise, giving away their wickets tamely. Another debutant R Ashwin sparkled down the order with a 32-ball 38 during which he struck four boundaries and a six.
Left-arm pacer Thilan Thushara was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers with figures of three for 57 from his nine overs while off-spinner Suraj Randiv picked up two crucial wickets for 38 from his quota of 10 overs.
