1 killed, 30 injured in Jallikattu

Madurai, Jan 16 (PTI): One person was killed and 30 injured in the 'Jallikattu' (taming of the bull) at nearby Pallumedu today, held as part of the Pongal harvest festivities. More than 300 persons participated in the event, which was held as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court. The injured were immediately treated at a medical camp set up near the venue, officials said. They said organisers of the jallikattu at Alanganallur tomorrow have fixed a fee of Rs 500 for participants. On November 27, 2010 the supreme court in accordance with the law enacted on regulation of event, permitted the Tamil Nadu government to allow �jallikattu� for five months in a year from January 15 . The court said animals participating in the event are to be categorized as per provisions of the Act and that District Collectors are to make sure that the animals should be registered to the Animal Welfare Board. The Board would also send its representative to monitor the event.
